Article - Another Fantastic Season for LFC Vancouver

By LFC Vancouver member Ste Speed, 24 May 2009.

For our final newsletter of the season I want to say thank you from the heart to everyone who has joined us at the G Sport this season. It is incredible how much the club has grown over the past three years and the attendances throughout this season were absolutely incredible. The atmosphere was always great and you all deserve huge credit for helping to make the supporters club such a wonderful family.

There have been many highlights this season to remember. The season started off in style last year with the two club BBQ’s thanks to our wonderful hosts, Pat & Paddy and John & Dorothy. There was first annual LFC Vancouver pitch & putt contest at Stanley Park, which I think Kev won, but as we were all pretty drunk I can’t honestly remember! There was also the unforgettable outing to see Gerry & the Pacemakers and we all got to pose for snaps with Gerry afterwards. The season was also blocked off with two games against the Vancouver Chelsea Supporters Club. We won the game last August really heavily and narrowly lost the latest game a few days ago. We also formed an indoor footy team and entered a league at Sportstown in Richmond, which is ongoing for the summer now.

It was a fabulous year to be a Liverpool supporter here in Vancouver and everything is now in place for it to continue into the future. The club is filled with lovely, friendly people and we get excellent service at the G Sport so I think it’s a certainty that next season will be just as great as it has been this time.

I’ll be seeing many of you on a regular basis throughout the summer and there are many of you I may not see as much until August. If I don’t see you over the summer I hope you have a great one and I’ll look forward to next season and renewing the good times all over again.

Thanks once again to you all.

Article - The Bleat Goes On.

By LFC Vancouver member Keith Perkins, 15 May 2009.

Just over two and a half years ago (November 2006), Kelvin MacKenzie (editor of The S*n in 1989) was giving a speech when he suddenly referred to his infamous front page “The Truth” story by saying that he would not make any apology for “telling it like it was.” He also said, in reference to his decision to publish the fabricated story, “I was not sorry then and I’m not sorry now.” He went on to explain that the only reason he backed down from the story shortly after it first appeared was that the owner, Rupert Murdoch, ordered him to do so. It’s hard to believe that this man was the editor of a “newspaper.” The story didn’t even have one piece of evidence to support it, and has been shown many times over and over again to be false. But why let truth or facts get in the way of a good story that is intended to sell newspapers? We’d be happy to forget the whole sorry story, but some people are determined to perpetuate the lies.

It was also more than two years ago (December 2006) that I was shocked to hear reports that the host of an American television football program had lost his cool during an exchange of opinions and began ranting and raving about the “horrors” of Liverpool FC. This was of course the famous outburst by Steve Cohen, host of the “Fox Football Fone-in” which is broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel. Mr. Cohen’s loudly voiced opinions can also be heard on Sirius Satellite radio, and is available as a podcast for those who just can’t get by without hearing the ranting of this self-confessed Chelsea supporter.

The beginning of all this was Mr. Cohen’s venomous attack, saying that he was “sick of hearing Liverpool’s constant bragging about how many trophies they have won,” or words to that effect. It could have stopped there, but he just had to say more. “There’s a disgusting side of Liverpool’s history that I’ll be happy to talk about” after which he went on to claim (loudly) that Liverpool supporters “directly caused the two worst disasters in English football history” - in reference to Heysel and Hillsborough. He went on to say that he was “sick of Liverpool fans ramming their success down his throat … there should be 39 coffins to go with the 5 stars on the badge.”

This type of misdirected attack, using falsehoods and insinuation, is exactly the same kind of “truth” that Kelvin MacKenzie believes in. That is, if you say it often enough, and loud enough, and with enough conviction, then it must be true. Of course, no discussion followed the statements from this “expert” nor was any time given for any caller to challenge the statements that were made. The only justification from this malicious ignoramus was that he was “entitled to his opinion” and he has “a right to speak freely”. If it was only an opinion, then it may be acceptable. But saying something that is plainly wrong and that goes against all of the facts is inexcusable. Freedom of speech applies to facts or opinions, not to lies. As a well respected writer once said, “Are you entitled to your opinion? No! You are entitled to your informed opinion.”

A week later, he attempted to make amends for his outburst. His entire speech took about thirty seconds, during which he made a few excuses and then the supposed apology came at the end. He admits to having “made some very disparaging remarks about Liverpool Football Club and their supporters.” His excuse is that, “in the heat of the moment” he made the comments in response to some attacks against his beloved Chelsea, and claimed that “I know that I’m a passionate Chelsea fan and it takes up almost all of my waking hours.” He goes on to say “I also know that when I am wound up about comments against Chelsea that like many fans I resort to insults that can be very hurtful. As a broadcast professional I should know better and not let it get to this stage. I’ve apologized on our radio show ‘World Soccer Daily’ and I’ve also apologized to the management here at Fox Soccer Channel. But most importantly I wish to apologies to all our viewers.”

The apology comes across like it was prepared by a public relations department, who then had him read it out word for word on air. It’s exactly the type of speech that you would hear from a politician or a celebrity who has been told to make “a statement” which is then supposed to be accepted by the general public as a way of saying “sorry, I didn’t mean it”. Any of us could do the same; just take some previous statements and copy and paste as needed. It’s not exactly a sincere apology, nor are the excuses acceptable. The worst part is that in his list of those he has apologized to, he badly misses the mark - he should be begging forgiveness from the families of the 96.

Still, I was willing to forget the whole thing and ignore him and others who continue to spout lies about Hillsborough. But once again it’s not possible. Just before the twentieth anniversary, on April-13-2009, Mr. Cohen was at it again. This time he was claiming that Liverpool supporters have to take some “shared responsibility” for the disaster, and not just blame others such as the South Yorkshire Police, or the FA, or Sheffield Wednesday FC. His main point was that 6-8,000 ticketless fans had forced their way in and thus caused the fatal crush. Once again, the story continued the following week when he felt he had to respond (reluctantly) in some way to the numbers of e-mails he had received.

“People think I do it solely for a wind-up. It’s not solely for a wind-up. People think it contributes to why I don’t like Liverpool – it’s the sole reason I don’t like Liverpool. It has nothing to do with the 11 or 17 [sic] players they put on the pitch…At the very least there is a degree of depraved indifference here from the people who stormed in.”

When questioned on his assertion that it was 6-8,000 ticketless fans pushing their way in, and that he should apologise and retract his comment if that number was wrong, he replied “If what we’re arguing about here, the difference in the exact numbers, then my argument is made for me because whether it’s 25, 2500 or 25,000, it has contributed to what happened …What I am saying, and I will continue to say it, … and I’ve had e-mails from a myriad of different Hillsborough groups, all very respectful and very nice, asking me to read this or read that, blah blah blah. … The point is that if the people hadn’t been outside it never happens [sic]. This is a stadium that had no problems prior to this particular day. That’s a fact.”

When further pressed about the number of ticketless fans (he originally claimed 6-8,000), his response once again was that the exact number doesn’t matter and even if he is wrong his point is made for him: “There were people there who shouldn’t have been there because they didn’t have tickets and they were hell-bent on getting in. I’m sorry, but those are the facts … I’m telling you now that this is how I feel about it … What I am talking about is shared responsibility … It is not possible, in my estimation, for this kind of tragedy to be had, whether the number is 8,000, 800, or 80 outside, there is no way that you can say that there are not some shared responsibilities. And I don’t care what reports come out from the British government, I don’t care how early they come out, and I don’t care about the Taylor Report. This is a logical argument; a logical argument.” (Italics are his emphasis).

Well, in fact there had been problems before at this stadium (in particular in 1981, 1987, and 1988), but like Mr. MacKenzie, why let the facts get in the way of a good dishonest rant? The “logical argument” of how the exact number of ticketless fans, and whether it’s 25 or 25,000 makes his point or his argument for him, is well beyond my understanding. It must be some form of logic that I haven’t experienced yet. Clearly if 25,000 tried to force their way in to an area with a capacity of 10,100 then you’d expect serious problems. If 25 forced their way in to that same area of 10,100 then I can’t believe that it would result in 96 fatalities and hundreds of injuries. Of course, if you had read the Taylor Report you would have seen that the actual number estimated to be in that area (according to a combination of turnstile counters, eye-witnesses, and CCTV camera evidence) was in fact a range of from 9,267 to a maximum of 10,124. Also, “there was not an abnormally large number of fans without tickets on this occasion” and “… police witnesses … did not consider the number of ticketless fans to be inordinately large. This accords with two other sources of evidence.” Both quotes are taken from the Interim Taylor Report, but of course Mr. Cohen “doesn’t care about the Taylor Report.” Would that be because it disagrees with his “facts”? We can probably assume that he’s also not interested in British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s recent assessment of the tragedy when he said: “… people understood that the behaviour of Liverpool fans in helping each other was, as I think the judge said, ‘magnificent’; that it was wrong for people to blame, as some did, Liverpool fans on that day.” Mr. Cohen probably also doesn’t care that the current Chief Constable of the South Yorkshire Police, Meredydd Hughes, recently stated “South Yorkshire Police fully accept their responsibility for the Hillsborough disaster” and went on to explain that every aspect of policing before, during, and after a football match has completely changed as a result of the Final Taylor Report.

Considering his recent comments and continued attacks, deliberately timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Hillsborough, how sincere does that previous (more than two years old) apology look now? Mr. Cohen still wasn’t willing to end there either. He followed up his ridiculous rants by challenging anyone to a “debate” on Hillsborough. I put the word debate in quotes simply because I can see the type of debate that this would turn into – most likely of the Bill O’Reilly variety. He’s sometimes described as “The most powerful name in news” by some, or “One man who has raised the volume and lowered the tone of US television news” by others who are not so taken with his style. His form of discussion with a guest he disagrees with turns into a diatribe instead of a debate. In one famous episode, not long after September 11th 2001, he was interviewing Jeremy Glick whose father had died in the World Trade Center attacks. The problem was that Mr. Glick held an anti-war point of view and disagreed with the idea that the US should bomb innocent civilians in a foreign country. Mr. O’Reilly became more and more enraged that he should be disagreeing with his pro-war opinion, and instead of letting Mr. Glick finish speaking, started to yell “Shut Up!” at him and then turned to his floor staff saying, “Cut off his mic.” After the show aired, Mr. Glick revealed that he was then physically threatened by the host (O’Reilly), who said “Get out of my studio before I tear you to f…g pieces.” In another well known episode, supposedly debating with a foreign journalist, he referred to the damage that the French economy had suffered as a result of not joining the US invasion of Iraq. He claimed that according to the Paris Business Review, France had lost billions of dollars in trade as a result of US boycotts of French products. The problem with those statements is that trade between USA and France had actually increased during that period, and there’s no such publication as the Paris Business Review. It might be okay to pass this off as harmless entertainment, but when it’s presented as news (after all, it’s broadcast on an all-news channel) then it’s taken by most people to be accurate, or that they can safely assume it’s so.

A study by the University of Maryland showed that 80% of people who watch Fox News exclusively, believed one or more of the common myths about the Iraq invasion: i.e. Saddam Hussein was directly involved in the 9-11 attacks, that the US had found weapons of mass destruction, and that most of the other countries of the world agreed with the US invasion. What was even more interesting was that the study showed that the more that people watched Fox News, the more likely they were to believe those myths. That is, the more you watch, the dumber you get! I would say that the same applies to anyone who reads Mr. MacKenzie’s newspaper “reports”, or listens to Mr. Cohen’s “opinions.”

It may be okay for some people to be misinformed or unaware of facts; but when someone who is in a position where they should know the truth but ignores it, then there is a serious problem. When those people are then given a public platform to spread the inaccuracies, then it compounds the problem even more. We rely on our newspapers and television reports to give us facts, not lies. They should take that responsibility seriously and treat us with the respect that we deserve. I’m not one to give much time to conspiracy theories, but I have to wonder about this: The Fox Soccer Channel is part of the Fox television empire, which is also responsible for the Fox News channel, all of which are owned by Rupert Murdoch. That’s the same individual who owns “that tabloid rag of a newspaper”. Is that really just a coincidence, or do I see more in it that than I should? There’s a definite pattern with all of these examples, so perhaps it’s not surprising that all of them depend on style over substance, or sensationalism before accuracy. It’s all about audience numbers, and if that means lowering journalistic standards to increase those numbers then so be it.

Marshall Mcluhan famously said that the modern methods of mass communication would replace the print media through a process of “electronic interdependence” leading to a new form of virtual society he called the “global village.” It’s easy to see that this is taking place as radio, television, internet blogs, and podcasts take the place of traditional in-depth written reporting. The sad part is that now any fool can have access to various mass media, and unfortunately many of them do. The global village is now a reality, and clearly we have more than a few global village idiots to contend with.

Finally, in response to Mr. Cohen’s challenge to a “debate”, I’ll throw down the gauntlet myself and invite him to come here to Vancouver to take part in a real Hillsborough discussion. Not a debate, because there’s nothing left after 20 years of studies and inquiries left open to debate. I’ll have a colleague or two on my side, and Mr. Cohen can bring one or two of his allies to support his side (if he has any!). We’ll find a suitable venue (one of the local colleges or universities would be ideal), we’ll find a moderator that we can both agree on to direct the proceedings and keep things in order, and then we’ll find out who has the true story and who’s spreading lies. I can’t wait to hear from him and find out more about his “logical” arguments. But I won’t be holding my breath.

Article - Hillsborough 20th Anniversary Fundraisers.

By LFC Vancouver member Keith Perkins, 26 May 2009.

This year marked the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy when 96 members of the Liverpool family were lost one terrible afternoon. It’s a sad occasion for all of us, as it is every year, and we can only imagine what it must be like for those on the front lines fighting for justice for the victims and their families for the past two decades. As always in these cases, we ask ourselves: “Is there something that we can do to help?” The answers are not easy to give as the legal battles continue to be waged, and that is surely beyond most of us. But, those legal battles inevitably cost a lot of money and that’s one place where we definitely can jump in to assist the cause.

Back in March of this year, LFC Vancouver decided to raise money for the Hillsborough Justice Campaign by a combination of a collection and a raffle for a couple of prizes, which would take place around April 15th. Those two events raised a total of $510.00 from members who were in attendance for the Premier League match (Blackburn) on April 11th, and the Champions League match (Chelsea) on the 14th. Ste Speed was almost singlehandedly responsible for this effort, and he should be applauded for the work that he put in for both the raffle and the collection. Our members gave generously, and of course we thank all of you who contributed to the cause. Ste arranged for a payment to be sent electronically to the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, and they very kindly acknowledged the donation from LFC Vancouver with the following letter:

Hillsborough

Justice Campaign

24th May 2009

Dear Steven,

I am writing to thank you and the Vancouver Supporters Club for your very generous donation of $510 to the Hillsborough Justice Campaign. I apologise for the delay in writing to you however, as I am sure you can appreciate, things have been somewhat hectic over the last few months.

The announcement that police files are to be released has provided a big boost to everyone at the campaign and we believe that the sustained pressure exerted by the justice campaign has been a major factor in this recent development. Undoubtedly, the Hillsborough Justice Campaign could not have survived if it wasn’t for the generosity of people like you. Your donations have enabled us to maintain the fight for justice. Thank you.

Yours sincerely

After that, there was still some money left over from a couple of late donations, plus some extra money in the club account that was an unexpected bonus, and so we decided to put it all together for a second donation. Kevin Parnell generously donated a large amount by not being reimbursed for some money that he’d paid out of his own pocket for club administration costs. He asked that instead of giving it back to him from the club account, that it should be added to the total to be donated. There were some other similar amounts, which were then added to some late donations after the first had already been sent, which came to a total of $450.00

I suggested that this second donation could be made to the Hillsborough Family Support Group, and so it was decided that I would send this to them, also electronically, a week or two after the first donation was made to HJC. A confirmation was received almost instantly from both Bob McCluskey and Margaret Aspinall, thanking us for the donation and saying that a proper acknowledgement would be forthcoming.

Just this evening, I received that acknowledgement, which is shown in the picture below. Bob arranged for the cheque presentation to take place this past weekend and then sent the picture for us all to enjoy. It’s great to see that former Liverpool players are still fully involved so many years later, and confirms what I’ve always said about Liverpool FC being a family club.

Kirsty of Retro Reds Memorabilia presents a cheque for £250.00 (from LFC Vancouver) to Liverpool legends Joey Jones and John Aldridge, payable to HFSG.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this year’s fundraising drive; your donations have been gratefully received. Thanks also to Kenny Derbyshire of the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, and Bob Mcluskey and Margaret Aspinall of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, for their continued efforts in the fight for truth and justice. VIP Communications

We are asking for your support in the boycotting of the advertisers of Mr. Steven Cohen and his shows. Those being World Soccer Daily on Sirius Satellite and Fox Football Fone-in on the Fox Soccer Channel.

You are probably aware that this action is being taken due to the recent remarks by Mr. Cohen concerning the Hillsborough tragedy whereby Mr. Cohen has stated unequivocally that Liverpool supporters should "share responsibility" for the deaths of the 96.

Mr. Cohen was asked to give authoritative support for his claims or apologize and share with his listeners the facts. Mr. Cohen has done neither and is adamant about his "opinion".

Therefore we are asking for this extraordinary action from you our supporters. It is your choice to assist us in this matter.

We would also like for you not to email or call Mr. Cohen or his shows. Any interaction with Mr. Cohen he will use as an indication that the boycott is ineffective.

These advertisers have already responded and we would like you to offer your support for their actions:

Fado's Irish Pubs
FourFourTwo ( Haymarket publishing)
World Soccer Shop ( 365-inc. )

Further, we believe Setanta will not accept any more advertising from World Soccer Daily once the current contract expires.

We will update the list of advertisers as necessary.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter,

Email sent to Mr. Cohen and his advertisers:

Official Notice Of Boycott by North American Liverpool Supporter Branches

Dear Advertisers:

Previously you were notified of a potential boycott by Liverpool supporters in North America. We are now ready to make this an official position. We will be notifying our members through the branches and through multiple supporter websites of this action including the official LiverpoolFC website.

We have given Mr. Cohen ample time to review the facts presented to him or for him to present his documentable evidence which supports his position as requested. Mr. Cohen and I have exchanged emails for the past 9 days. They have been civil. However, he has stated we have nothing further to discuss.

He has not presented any evidence to support his position.

You are probably wondering what has led to this action:

History:

On December 5th 2006 on the Fox Football Fone-in television show, Mr Cohen made these remarks:

" Liverpool supporters are directly responsible for causing the two worst disasters in English football history, Heysel and Hillsborough". That "there is a disgusting side of Liverpools history that he would be happy to talk about."

He was also quoted on his Sirius radio show of making the comment; " They have five stars on their shirts but should have 39 coffins."

These comments and others caused outrage by Liverpool supporters and many emails were sent to Fox Soccer Channel and Sirius Satellite Radio. The facts concerning the disasters were sent to offset these outrageous claims.

One week later on December 12th 2006 on Fox Football Fone-in television show, Mr Cohen opened the show with this:

" But first, last week here on Fox Football Fone-in, in the heat of the moment, I made some very disparaging remarks about Liverpool Football Club and their supporters. I know that i'm a passionate Chelsea fan and it takes up almost all of my waking hours . I also know that when i'm wound up over comments against Chelsea, like many fans, I resort to insults that can be very hurt full. As a broadcast professional I should know better and not let it get to this stage. I've apologized on my radio show World Soccer Daily and i've also apologized to the management here at Fox Soccer Channel. But most importantly I wish to apologize to all our viewers."

At that point in time most supporters were satisfied that our concerns over his comments of laying blame to Liverpool supporters allowed him to reflect on his "opinion" and he had realized his error due to the facts presented to him.

History Part 2:

April 15, 2009 was the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster where 96 Liverpool supporters were crushed to death.

Mr. Cohen once again took the opportunity to lay a claim of "some responsibility" of blame should be shared by Liverpool supporters due to ticketless fans getting into the stadium. He originally claimed 6-8,000 ticketless fans got in. Which was then revised to "2-3,000 or 25 or 1, it makes no difference."

I have presented various facts to Mr. Cohen. You can judge for yourself.

SWFC ( Sheffield Wednesday Football Club) Hillsborough stadium turnstiles recorded the number of admissions and in addition they had installed cameras which were used to count any fans climbing over the turnstiles. Their stats show the ticket allocation was not exceeded.

The health and safety executive reviewed electronic counters and cctv footage of the turnstiles and counted each person, who came in thru the turnstiles, climbed over the wall and came in thru gate c etc, they too showed that the allocation of tickets was not exceeded.

see 8.1 conclusions. health and safety report on hillsborough in the Taylor report.
" my best estimate of the number of people admitted thru turnstiles a-g and thru gate c is 9734. It is my opinion that the true total is most unlikely to have exceeded 10'124 i.e The total number of admissions were approximately equal to the designated capacity of 10'100 people for the west( leppings lane) terraces." As reported to the independent inquiry by the South Yorkshire Health and Safety Officer.

They were still admitting fans to the stadium as late as 3:10 as cctv evidence shows. The crush had already happened.

If you put the majority of 9734 people into an area not designed for it, as the side pens were virtually empty, that is what caused the problem. Further LFC had over 10,000 tickets for that end.

If you research the situation, you too will come to the same conclusion. The numbers don't add up for ticketless fans to be a reason for the crush, if any got in anyway. The total allocation wasn't admitted before the crush happened.

Further if any ticketless fans did get in, they along with ticketed fans were directed by the police into an overcrowding pen down a tunnel and not into the virtually open side pens. So any blame attached to ticketless fans dissipates because of the police involvement in directing supporters into the main pen. And as the total Liverpool allocation hadn't even been admitted into the ground before the crush happens this also disproves the assertion that any ticketless fans who did sneak in means Liverpool supporters themselves should share some of the blame. His assertion may only have weight if all ticketed fans made it in before kickoff and the ticketless fans--added to the problem. Which is what clearly did not happen.

In conclusion it makes no difference if any ticketless fans got in anyway because capacity was not met. There was still room for 390 more supporters to enter to make capacity. Mr. Cohen refuse to believe the official investigations reporting of the incident.

Which leaves us with the unsavory analysis of Mr. Cohen's remarks that it is the fans themselves who packed the stands who should share the blame for the crush. So in essence he is laying the "shared responsibility" blame on those 9638 supporters who survived the crush for the deaths of the 96 who did not come home that day. Some of those survivors or their family members now reside in North America. That is his damning indictment of our supporters and one which is unfounded, hurtful and as far as we are concerned is a blatant outright lie.

His previous apology apparently is hollow. So we have chosen to take additional steps as a course of action because the truth and facts are not being disseminated on his show. There is only one opinion allowed and frequently put forth on his show, which is accusing Liverpool supporters of "shared responsibility". Not for going to a football match and following the stadium management and police directions as they did do. Along with the supporters being exonerated by any investigation into the tragedy. There was no action on the supporters part entering the stadium or in the pens themselves which was questioned by any research done of the tragedy.

There is no Freedom of Speech issue here. As Mr. Cohen is free to make any remarks or comments on the show he likes. Of course those that are hurtful and as damning as his remarks have been means that there are consequences that we will now exercise as an apology is not forthcoming along with the truth and facts of the tragedy being disseminated on his show(s).

So we will ask official members, other Liverpool supporters in North America and those Worldwide who have access to any product or service advertised on his show to boycott those products or services. We will have our branches notify their members of this action.

As mentioned previously we will also remind our supporters in August when the season resumes and will update them on those advertisers who support an individual who is allowed to make accusations with no documentary facts as outrageous and damning as those of Mr. Cohen.

We hope you understand our actions have nothing specific to do with your product or service. We would appreciate your support on this issue.

We want to thank those companies who have already taken action due to reviewing the facts and coming to a similar conclusion:

FourFourTwo
365-inc.
Fado's

Lastly we would like to thank New England Revolution Manager Stevie Nicol who was a player for Liverpool at Hiillsborough that day who has notified Mr. Cohen that he will have no more to do with any of his shows.

Sincerely,
Mel ( Last name)
