REINA CENTRE-STAGE IN HOMECOMING

Jimmy Rice

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina took centre-stage as the victorious Spain
squad paraded the Euro 2008 trophy in front of hundreds of thousands of
fans in Madrid on Monday night.
A massive 80 per cent of Spain's television audience watched their men
triumph over Germany on Sunday night – and it seemed as though most of them
were on the streets of the Spanish capital to greet their heroes yesterday.

It was Reina who took the microphone to introduce each and every one of his
teammates.

It seemed an appropriate role for the shot-stopper who, despite featuring
just once in the group stages, was a massive presence in the squad – as
evident from his celebrations whenever his teammates found the net.

Goalscoring hero Fernando Torres also had a word or two to say, telling the
masses: "I would like to thank all the fans. This triumph belongs to you,
because without your support we would not be here now. Thank you."

Also present were Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso, both of whom played their
part in Spain's first major honour since 1964.
