Anderlecht 0 Liverpool 1
A decent, entertaining game as is expected from our European games these days. Anderlecht and ourselves kept giving the ball away and it's great to see Cisse score too (and what a goal!) but we didn't convert our chances again. That said, Alonso and Sissoko were class again and Riise looked like he's approaching some form again. Defensively we look well drilled compared to last season and Garcia did so-so. If Anderlecht had someone with shooting boots on however we could've been kicking ourselves over some glaring misses. But hey, job done, 3 points away from home is good enough for now!

Next Game
Fulham v Liverpool (Saturday 22 Oct; 7AM PST. On tape delay on Fox Sports World Canada Monday 24 Oct at noon for those who won't peek at the results or won't download it earlier!) We don't have another match for a meetup yet, but we're still planning another game in early November/late October at the Library Square Public House. Details as we get them. For Reds out in the Fraser Valley interested in coming in for the games, we can help you figure out a carpool if that would help. Contact us and we can hopefully sort something out. It sure doesn't hurt with the price of gas right now! We've got membership cards completed and ready to go as well so bring your $20 and join up at the next meetup.

Article - For Club Or Country?

By LFC Vancouver member Keith Perkins, 18 Oct 05 The recent international break can be seen as both a blessing and a curse for many players and clubs. For some of the lower clubs, it’s a chance to rest and regroup, and to have time to work on their training. It also allows players with the odd bump and bruise an extra week to recover before the next competitive match. For many of the higher clubs, though, there is no such luxury. Many of their players are called away for international duty, with some clubs, including Liverpool, losing virtually their entire squad for most of the two weeks. These "privileged few" will be expected to be ready for two crucial matches in a five day period, followed by a travel day and a return to their club to play again for their respective clubs the day after that. For the England squad this time around, it wasn’t as bad as it could have been as both matches were played at Old Trafford. But for the likes of Riise, Alonso, Garcia, Cisse, Hyppia, Zenden and so on, it can mean extensive travel across Europe (and for some players, such as Kewell, even further afield). Every player will say that it’s an honour to be asked to play for their country and that it is a dream come true if and when they make it to the World Cup Finals or the Euro Championships. But, how do we see it as supporters of our club? For me, the international matches are less attractive now than they have ever been. I suppose I should be cheering for my country, but in fact I don’t have very much enthusiasm for that. First of all, I have to repeatedly explain to everyone around me that my country is Canada first and England second, and has been for most of my life. I have long maintained that I would cheer for Canada if they were playing against England, so why is it assumed that I should be excited about England topping their group (which was in serious doubt for a while according to the critics of Sven Gormless Eriksson)? Second, Canada have not exactly been inspiring for the last ten or so years. Canada was knocked out of the qualifying stages long ago and is now in yet another "rebuilding" phase. So, if I want to watch internationals I have to revert to supporting England, only because I was born there and feel as though I should show some amount of loyalty. But then again how loyal can I be? It’s not easy for a Liverpool supporter to cheer for a team that includes Lampard, Terry, Rooney, Campbell, one or both Nevilles, and is captained by Beckham. I’ll grant you that it’s easy to cheer for Gerrard, Carragher and any other Reds in the team, but that is becoming less rather than more frequent. The Reds are my team and have been ever since I first became interested in the sport. The ultimate conflict of loyalty came just over a month ago when Canada played a friendly against Spain. Canada starts with Radzinski (Fulham), Stalteri (Tottenham), and Hume (Leicester) amongst others. Meanwhile Spain starts with Reina in goal and Luis Garcia playing down the right. In the second half, Alonso comes on to make three Reds on the pitch for Spain against none for Canada. Should I be ashamed that I cheered when Morientes came on later and scored Spain’s second for a 2-0 win? I was hoping that a goal for Spain would give him confidence when returning to Liverpool and would hopefully be a big step towards getting him back to his best. The hope turned to despair when an injury picked up during the match was enough to keep him out of contention for the Reds for several weeks. For this latest round of qualifying, Gerrard takes an injury that keeps him out of at least one premier league match and one champions league match. The clubs that have no players involved in internationals must be breathing a sigh of relief as their injured players have time to recover while teams like us lose out. Should we feel lucky that it was only one player with an injury? Surely we had more than our share last season and won’t have to suffer through so many this season. So it’s with mixed feelings that I say congratulations to the countries that have now qualified (including England), best of luck to those with the playoff round still to go, and better luck next time for those who didn’t make it (including Canada). And yes, of course I’ll be watching next summer when the best players in the world are on display to entertain and mesmerise us with their skills, and yes of course I will be cheering for England. Or won’t I? What do you think? Fire us a reply and we'll get it to Keith, and try to put it in next week's newsletter
